  • Received a B.A. in English from the University of Pittsburgh in 1978
  • Writer for over 15 years before her first book was published
  • Single mom of teenage daughter Brittney
  • As an early morning writer, she gets up around 5 or 6 in the morning and writes for a couple of hours 
  • Collects African American dolls
  • Born and raised in inner city Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Took two years to complete The Skin I’m In
  • Worked as public relations director for the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Graduate School for over seven years before becoming a full time writer.
  • Young Adult authors that she likes to read are Walter Dean Myers, Sharon Draper, and Nikki Grimes
  • Favorite types of movies are romance and humor
  • Favorite hobby is gardening
